What counts

The rule for a chain is its owner. Anything with a national or regional corporate parent is out. A San Diego group with a few locations of its own stays.

248 chain locations were taken out of the OpenStreetMap pull of on that test. Hot Tip does not record who owns a place, so it will not tell you a business is family owned or that the owner lives down the street. It tells you what each place is not. How the map is made, and what is left off.

By neighborhood

66 areas have a page that lists every independent in them. Another 412 places sit in 57 smaller areas with no page yet. They are on the map in the app.

Are these family owned restaurants?

Some are, and Hot Tip cannot tell you which. It does not record who owns a place or where they live. What every place here has in common is what it is not: part of a national or regional chain.

Which San Diego neighborhoods have the most independent businesses?

By the count on the map: Convoy and Kearny Mesa (336), Chula Vista (309), Mira Mesa (290), Pacific Beach (213), Escondido (205) and Point Loma (198). Every one of the 66 areas with a page lists its places in full.

6,387 is too many to choose from.

That is what the app is for. Say what you feel like and it answers with one of these: independent, near you, open right now. Go, and the stamp lands.
