No, and that is the point. The map holds 6,479 places, counted on 5 October 2026, which is close to every independently owned business in the 123 neighborhoods and towns it covers across San Diego County. A place does not earn its way on by being popular, written about, or talked about online. If it is independent and it is here, it is on the map.

OpenStreetMap, which is a public map of the world that anyone can edit, and whose licence allows storing and republishing the data with attribution. The listings are then corrected by hand: duplicates merged, closed places taken off, chains removed. 117 places were added after a local write-up named somewhere the map had missed. The mentions on a place's page are of two kinds, kept apart. Links to publications that named it: San Diego Magazine, The Infatuation, San Diego Beer News, the San Diego Reader, Time Out, the San Diego Tourism Authority and 90 smaller publications. And links to threads on 12 San Diego subreddits where it comes up, which are people talking and are counted as that. No rating or review is taken from Google, Yelp or anywhere else.

Chains, and places that have closed. 248 chain locations were removed from the OpenStreetMap pull of 7 September 2026, including the fast-food names you would expect. The test is the corporate parent: anything owned by a national or regional chain is out, and a San Diego group with a few locations of its own stays. 116 more listings have come off since because the place shut or was never somewhere to visit, each with a source. Nothing is excluded on grounds of quality, price, or how new it is.

Because the moment places carry a score, the map becomes a ranking, and a ranking is the thing Hot Tip exists to avoid. You already have Google and Yelp for rankings. What Hot Tip does show is where a place has been named by local sources: its listing links to them, and so does its own page, along with the Reddit threads it comes up in. The talked-about page lists the places named both ways.

Two things. It is independently owned, which is the only quality filter Hot Tip applies. And where we know something true about a place, it carries one written line about who runs it or what to order. That line is written by a person, not scraped, so it only exists where it is real. 101 places have one so far.

No. Listing is built from public data, which is ordinary directory practice, and no business is contacted or asked for anything. Businesses can claim their listing for free to set their own hours and details. Claiming never moves a place up the answers.
