Where should I eat in San Diego?
Here. Pick a part of the county, press Tip me, and you get one independently owned place to eat that is open right now. One place, not a list.
pick a part of town, then this
Your tip lands here.
One place, open right now, independently owned. Never a list.
Your tip for tonight
first time
Nothing open close by. Want to widen it?
Real places and real hours, from the live Hot Tip map on . Listings start from OpenStreetMap and are corrected by hand.
How it picks
It does four things, in this order. It keeps only places that are open now, at the minute you press, from the hours on record. It keeps only independents: 248 chain locations were taken off the map before it started. It stays near you, which on this page means the part of the county you picked and in the app means a walk or a short drive from where you are standing. Then it gives you one place, and not one of the last three it gave you.
- Open now

- Near you
- One place
Not a wheel.
A random wheel spins the names you typed into it. It does not know if the place it lands on is open, how far away it is, or whether it is the same chain you were trying to avoid. Hot Tip starts from the other end: every independent place around you, minus the ones that are shut, and only then a pick. You never type a list, and it never sends you to a locked door.
Fair questions
Where should I eat in San Diego tonight?
Press Tip me at the top of this page. It answers with one independent place to eat that is open at the minute you press, in the part of the county you chose. If you would rather see them all, at 7pm on a Friday 754 of the 883 independent places to eat with hours on record are open, and at 10pm 168, counted on 5 October 2026.
Is this a random restaurant picker?
Only at the last step. Before anything is drawn, it keeps places that are open right now, drops every chain, stays in the part of the county you asked for, and sets aside the last three it gave you. A wheel does none of that. It spins the names you typed in and does not know whether the one it lands on is open.
Does it ever send me to a chain?
No. 248 chain locations were taken off the map before it started, by their corporate parent, and none can be the answer. A San Diego group with a few locations of its own is not a chain here.
What is the difference between this page and the app?
This page has no idea where you are, so it asks for a part of the county and draws from a sample of the map: 458 places with hours and a street address, a few from each of 63 areas. The app uses where you are standing and how far you are willing to go, answers from every place with hours on record (1,805 on 5 October 2026), and puts places you have never been ahead of ones you have.
If you would rather read the list
The app knows where you are standing.
That is the difference. Open Hot Tip, say what you feel like and how far you will go, and the one place it answers with is 6,479 independent places narrowed down to the one near you that is open.
